{"id":255,"date":"2017-12-13T00:52:22","date_gmt":"2017-12-13T00:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/se-asiacenter.org\/?p=255"},"modified":"2018-12-21T01:33:25","modified_gmt":"2018-12-21T01:33:25","slug":"cross-cultural-celebrationsnewsletter-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/se-asiacenter.org\/index.php\/2017\/12\/13\/cross-cultural-celebrationsnewsletter-7\/","title":{"rendered":"CROSS-CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS|Newsletter 7"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:center\">Building Bridges Newsletter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><strong>Newsletter Seven<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This is one of a series of newsletters written by Peter Porr and Paul Sjordal between September 1993 and December 1995 for the purpose of explaining the South-East Asia Center\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>Building Bridge\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;objectives, philosophy,&nbsp;and&nbsp;approach to learning.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This is one of a series of newsletters written by Peter Porr and Paul Sjordal between September 1993 and December 1995 for the purpose of explaining the South-East Asia Center\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>Building Bridge\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;objectives, philosophy,&nbsp;and&nbsp;approach to learning.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CROSS-CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holiday celebration can be fun, multiculturally educational and legal &#8212; as far as separation of church and state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christmas carols, for instance, can easily be turned into multicultural lessons.&nbsp; Children can feel they are participating in the spirit of the season while teachers can feel they are abiding by the law and teaching lessons with a virtuous, yet <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">non<\/g>&#8211; sectarian theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>One World<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>(Tune\nof &#8220;We Three Kings&#8221;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">We four peoples of one world are,<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">We four pe-oples all under the stars,<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">We\nof Eu-rope, we of A-sia, <\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">We\nof Africa,&nbsp; A-mer-i-ca.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">We\nshare hope, and we share dreams.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">We\nshare needs, and we share deeds.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">We\nall toil; we spring from soil;<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">We\nall pass on; we're all soon gone.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">We\nall share a glorious Past.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">We\nall share a terrible Past.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Wars\nand strife have plagued us all<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">While\npeace and beauty have equally called.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Why\ndivide us?&nbsp; Why defy us?<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">We\nare one and never four.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Feedback<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Teachers from McCutcheon and Goudy schools have given\nSEAC&#8217;s Multicultural Program some feedback which our editors would like to\nshare with you in this our last issue of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I hear the children supporting each other more and more, with positive comments and peer tutoring. I see conflicts resolved peacefully with individual students suggesting solutions in which everybody wins.&nbsp; There have been countless small victories which add up to a much improved classroom environment conducive to optimal learning and development. <em>I think this program should be implemented state-wide and even nation-wide. <\/em>   <\/p><cite> McCutcheon (Julie Scott, ESEA, 1st grade)  <br><br><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8230;helped children to learn to care for one another &#8230;. sensitized them to others feelings&#8230;.&nbsp; contributed to their growth toward becoming more productive people<g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation multiReplace\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\">&#8230;.<\/g>They have learned to show affection and a real caring for fellow students<g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation multiReplace\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">&#8230;.<\/g> They now can work together effectively and incidents of unacceptable behavior dropped so dramatically that no major behavioral eruption occurred the entire school year.<\/p><cite> McCutcheon (Sandra Silverglade, ESEA, 1st grade) <br><br><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>It has also provided them with the necessary skills to use in their\nthought process to decide right from wrong.<\/p><cite> Goudy&nbsp; (Mrs. Bernice Eiland, 8th grade) <br><br><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The topics discussed, self-esteem, racial relations, and goal\nsetting, gave my students insight and opportunities to explore their self\nawareness.<\/p><cite> Goudy (Darlene Nelson, 7th grade) <br><br><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>The varied activities and materials held the interest of the\nstudents. It was evident through their participation that they were learning\npositive values and developing skills to use throughout their lives. As a\nwhole, we can see that the number of students resistant to changes in attitudes\nwas greatly reduced.<\/p><cite> McCutcheon (Angela Kinds, Glenda Thompson, Vicki Nissim, Andrea Finkle, 2nd &amp; 3rd grades) <br><br><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traditional Multicultural Glossary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>tolerance:<\/strong> a value denoting respect of others beliefs, folk ways, religion, etc. without sharing them; connotes lack of ability or desire to distinguish values; see <em>respect<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ethnic pride:<\/strong> pride in ones race and ethnic group; can divert focus from <em>self<\/em> esteem<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>race:<\/strong> superficial human characteristics that separate human beings into distinct groups<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ethnic fest: <\/strong>a festival at which ethnic foods, music, dance, dress are displayed in anticipation that this superficial exercise will bring interethnic respect <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>diversity: <\/strong>a mixture of ethnic groups, races, religions, beliefs often&nbsp; celebrated for the sake of or value of differences diverts attention from humankind&#8217;s basic oneness and inadvertently makes us feel separate as sub-species of humanity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>respect:<\/strong> a value which denotes that each person should esteem the beliefs, folk ways, religion, etc. of others; [can sidestep the value of developing tools of critical thinking and independent thought necessary for human progress and sensitivity to evil in any culture or milieu]; see <em>tolerance<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ethnic holiday:<\/strong> a day designated usually by a government or religion which celebrates an ethnic hero, a noteworthy event such as an&nbsp; independence day of ethnic history or a holiday of a particular religion; [can promote stereotypes of ethnic groups and ethnic competition for holiday&nbsp; designation]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ethnic studies:<\/strong> the study of an ethnic group&#8217;s history, <g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">folk ways<\/g>, heroes, conquests, accomplishments <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">and<\/g> persecutions by others with an attempt to put that ethnic group on the map of humanity, sensitize&nbsp; to the tragic effects of the persecution&nbsp; and therefore help individuals of that ethnic group feel good about themselves<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>holocaust\/persecution&nbsp; studies:<\/strong> an effort to sensitize the world about the tragic inhumanity of one particular group of human beings against another; focuses usually on one ethnic group at one period of history exclusively; can, at worst, stereotype one ethnic group as evil without promoting a full understanding of why parts of an ethnic group or society become &#8220;<g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">disfunctional<\/g>&#8221; at times in history and what can be done by society at large, individuals and victims to better control their fate; at worst such studies can in some cases backfire, convincing the victims that they have no power to change their fate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;A\nNew Multicultural Glossary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>sensitivity: understanding for\nothers and their plight and the reasons that they act and think the way they do<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>self esteem:<\/strong> pride in oneself generated from ability of individuals to understand self and environment so as to be able to feel control over own life, understand how to set and accomplish goals; non-dependence on others, on groups or on organizations for self esteem<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>human being:<\/strong> a sophisticated type of animal that has the capacity for complex human emotions and is able to develop complex societies to satisfy basic emotional and physical needs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>humanity:<\/strong> all human beings; the only surviving species of the genus Homo Sapien Sapiens<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>commonality:<\/strong> a value more basic than human diversity; all human beings are essentially, elementally the same in biology and in needs both physical and emotional; the way&nbsp; humans fulfill their needs differs superficially <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;<g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\"><g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">humanidays<\/g><\/g>&#8220;:<\/strong> days which celebrate the oneness of humankind, the triumphs of peace and harmony over war and strife humanity studies; objective study of humanity worldwide and its failures and triumphs; study of humankind with a goal of understanding and promotion of tools for solving the\u00a0 problems of humanity and its peaceful and fulfilling existence;
