The theme of the Bridge International School at South-East Asia Center SUMMER FUN PROGRAM was Understanding the World Around You. Some of the ways that participants were introduced to this concept was though a variety of programs and mini-lessons.
Music Through the Years
In this activity, the school-age participants learned about music history. They explored different music genres, including jazz, blues, rock, classical, country, and hip hop. At the end of the activity, the participants were able to play an ensemble using guitar, ukulele, piano, and keyboard at the culminating event.
Research Mini-Class
Students used the Internet to research a subject of their choice. Before beginning they were instructed about best practices for determining reliable information and comparing it to information that might be less reliable or unreliable. The takeaway message was to be sure not to accept what you find in your first search as fact. Look for supporting evidence and be aware of red flags that might alert you to false or suspicious content. Working in groups, students compiled their research then presented their findings as an oral report.
River Bridge Tour
Prior to visiting the Chicago Bridge Museum downtown children were provided a special presentation about the importance and influence of the Chicago River on the establishment and growth of Chicago as a city and as a transportation center.
Children also visited the Botanical Conservatory in Lincoln Park, Harold Washington Library, and the Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary. Other on site activities included yoga lessons, and understanding superfood, why they’re important and what to ook for to improve nutrition.
