In this lesson Ms. Fei helps children better understand important terms like “systemic racism,” “police brutality” and “injustice” that are very much part of current events and which they might be hearing in the news and in conversations around them.
Her approach is to help children break down the words by searching for the root words within, presenting these terms in a way that third to fifth graders should be able to comprehend.
These terms can be highly charged so it is important for parents to realize that this is a starting point for having a more in-depth discussion with your child about your own personal position and to what extend your family is affected by various social conditions.
Children are encouraged to draw a picture, write a poem, or write an essay about what they think they know about the current social unrest and how they feel about it. Also check the dictionary to get a better understanding of words that you do not know.
The Bridge International School’s bridge building philosophy is predicated on promoting peace and finding commonality rather than stressing differences between groups of people.
