The purpose of the activity was to give local kids an appreciation of the art and architecture around them. It’s hoped that they will walk away from this experience understanding the unique aspects of their surroundings and a greater understanding of how cultures around the world have had an influence on their community.
Hopefully they have heard a few key terms and will take some time to look up and look around when they are out in the world. They should ask themselves about the materials being used in the buildings around them, what are the functions of the various buildings and why do they look the way they do? Is the primary objective of any of the building designs to meet the needs of the user or was the primary objective to impress the viewer?
There are a number of bank buildings in the area, some old and some new. Looking at any particular bank building you might ask if the design projects power, security and strength or friendliness and accessibility or something else.
